During the first fortnight in winter I made an interesting journey through the northern district. Around my home in the south there are pleasant meadows, little villages, woods and streams. But in the north I travelled through grimy industrial areas. Huge factories poured out clouds of dirty smoke, which was like a dark curtain across the sun. Railways, heavy Lorries, coal and iron and aluminium were everywhere. The people lived in vast cities of smoke and soot and roaring noise. Some folk were cheerfully smiling; but it wasn't surprising that many others were discontented and rough. Nevertheless, some of the northern folks come to live in the crowds and the din and the bustle of the industrial north. The north and the south are necessary to each other. The south grows the food for the north to eat, and the north makes the tools for the farmers of the south.

6.      Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below:                                                                                              [10]

Take a piece of paper and tear it in four. You will notice two things. It tears more easily in one direction than in the other, showing that the paper was made by machine otherwise it would tear the same way in all directions. Hire like fibers stick out from the edges of the paper showing that paper is a mat of tiny fibers, felted together. These fibers are the small particles of cellulose that help from the framework of plants.

Man invented papyrus before paper. The ancient Egyptians, about 4000 years ago, took the stems of the papyrus plant and peeled them and flattened them. Then they laid them cross-wise and pressed them down to stick them together. When dry, this made a sheet of papyrus and could be written on.

Paper itself was invented in China, by the man called Ts'ai Lun. He found a way to make paper from the stringy inner bark of the mulberry tree. He crushed the bark in water to separate fibers, and then poured the mixture onto a tray with a bottom of thin bamboo stripes. The water drained away and the soft mat was laid on the smooth surface to dry.
